The Magic of Camp Big/Little Sisters

One of the most cherished traditions at Camp Vega is our Camp Sister program—a special way to connect new and younger campers with older and more experienced campers. This connections helps both Big and Little Sisters feel supported, welcomed, and connected to something bigger than herself. This program builds lasting friendships, boosts confidence, fosters mentorship, and enhances the sense of community that makes Camp Vega so special.
Every year, junior campers (“Little Sisters”) are paired with senior campers (“Big Sisters”). These assignments are made with care, considering personalities, shared interests, and region to create meaningful connections. In the coming weeks, we will once again introduce Camp Sisters, giving them a chance to begin communicating before summer begins. This is an exciting opportunity for younger campers to ask questions, ease any pre-camp jitters, and feel supported by a seasoned Vega camper, while older campers gain the rewarding experience of being a role model their Little Sister can look up to.
Once the girls arrive at Vega, the magic of the Camp Sisters program truly comes to life. Big Sisters check in with their Little Sisters throughout the summer, playing games, sharing stories, and offering guidance. Every week, they also gather for a Camp Sister picnic, known as “Lawn Lunch,” where they can relax, enjoy a meal together, and strengthen their bond.
The Benefits of Being a Mentor and Power of Connection
There is a myriad of research about the benefits of cross-age youth mentorship. At camp we can see that being a Big Sister is a valuable leadership experience and great opportunity to boost integrity, develop communication skills, build confidence, and create a deeper sense of empathy, all key to the Vega Values.
Similarly, Little Sisters gain a friend and role model, helping them navigate their exciting camp experience with more confidence, comfort and support. We’re so excited to once again begin this annual tradition soon!
