As we count down the days to opening day at camp this summer, we find ourselves impressed with how Vega campers, parents, and staff have helped us evolve over the past 25 years. We recognize emotional and social growth in ourselves and others, and more deeply appreciate every opportunity to be in service of campers, parents and staff. So once again, thank you to all campers, alumni, parents and staff – here are some items we are deeply focusing on!
Activities
Vega’s scheduling coordinator, Brittany, has been reviewing activity selections from families and crafting campers’ schedules to maximize everyone’s experience! While having a choice based summer camp program creates a lot of work on the back end due to the time required to structure those choices, it also creates the positive and intrinsically motivated atmosphere we have grown to love. Research has shown giving kids a sense of control throughout their day improves emotional well-being, reduces stress, and promotes happiness. This autonomy is linked to better emotional regulation and overall mental health.
Camp Gear / Uniform
A few weeks ago we shared our 2025 packing list and let families know they can begin to get their girls’ camp gear for the summer! While Vega’s uniform has evolved since 1936, the benefits have stayed the same. Since these benefits can sometimes be taken for granted, we figured what better time to remind ourselves by doing a bit more reflection and research. Here is a list of reasons we came up with to answer the question, “Why Uniform?”
- Reduces social pressures
- Fosters a sense of belonging and unity
- Makes getting dressed in the morning easier
- Reduces focus on appearance
- Simplifies packing and reduces decision making fatigue
- Supports Vega traditions, identity, and security
We are beginning to look at Camp Big/Little Sister assignments, bunk placement, and finalizing our incredible 2025 staff. Until next time, let the countdown to summer continue – we cannot wait to join Vega 2025 on the shores of Echo Lake!
